Mikkelson Racing Engines has really come through and provided a strong / competative engine package. 2015 Ended on a good note for the Team. Although we didnt capture any wins on the the year we remained a podium threat at all but one races where we DNF'd. Over all the transition to Triple xxx Racing chassis proved a great move and we couldn't be happier with the car and responsive nature of this new platform. Currently we have Mikkelson Racing rebuilding our current 360 engine and Mike Waddel of Desert Winds Automotive building Another engine program at this time. Our 360 USAC engine is due to go on the Dyno any time now and will complete our engine program for 2016. Speed Freaks Racing Engines will be in charge of the Usac motor program and we are proud to have them on board. Stay tuned for 2016 results. 2013 Race Season10/17/13 Season Update13 races into the season and we find ourselves tied for the championship points battle. It has been a good season so far and we aim to finish strong and capture the title. With two races left Nov 25th and 26th @ Canyon Speedway Park its time to put it all on the line. The season has blessed us with many podium finishes and one feature win . The vast majority of the wins this season have come by Josh Shipley in the RSS Race Cars, Bob Bishop #2 of whom we are tied for the points lead. The Shelton Motorsports Team has been extremely consistent fielding a competitive car and performance each race with few mistakes, certainly our best season yet. All the pieces are in place to win a championship and we look forward to seeing all our friends, family and fans at this seasons final weekend. The #9 team has benefited from the great support from sponsors like Eco 3 oil Change, Chino Valley Towing and Mikkelson Race Engines and RSS Race Cars. Special Thanks to Mark and his Family with Chino Valley Towing for all the great support this season.
3/16/13 Canyon Speedway Park Season OpenerThe off season went by in a flash and the Shelton Motorsports Team is at it again. March 16th marked the start of the 2013 season for the Challeneg Cup Sprint cars at Canyon Speedway Park. A total of 15 cars turned out for the event and the track was fast as expected. With the help of Troy Mikkelson the #9 Spinter is sporting a fresh 360 CID chevy under the hood. Many of the changes we made during the winter are working out well and the competition is stronger than ever. Matt Lundy, Lonnie Oliver, Larry Gibson, Kiley Fellars and Josh Shipley have all returned to try there luck at a 2013 Championship. Johnny shelton Jr with a 2nd in points finish in 2012 has every intention of taking the championship for his own. With a 1st place heat race finish and a 3rd place Main event finish to start off the season, spirits are high for the team. Follow us while we charge for that first win of the year. (3/16/13 race recap by Johnny shelton Jr.) "We had the car dialed in pretty good for the heat race, the motor ran great and the track was heavy. I was able to get a pretty good lead on the field and won the heat. As the night went on the track stayed in good shape. I thought about loosening the car up a little for the main but decided against it at the last minute. Unfortunately the track was super tacky and I biked the car pretty hard on the start in turn 3. I really lucked out being able to gather it up but drew the yellow. With 20 laps to race I started at the back of the field and had the challenge of racing my way back to 4th. The car was real tight and a bit of a handful but good enough to drive me through the pack. Things got pretty exciting when we caught up to Kiley Fellars. We raced side by side for a couple laps crossing each other and hopefully putting on a good show. I finished 4th but there was a DQ which scored me 3rd. I want to thank those that continue to support us. The Shelton Family, our fans, Eco 3 Oil Change, Troy Mikkelson, Tom Champlin, Brinkley Bros."
2012 Race Season2012 Championship BanquetRegular season racing completed with the 2nd annual running of the Hall of Fame Classic at Canyon Speedway Park. A 19 point gap separated the Shelton Motorsports Team and 1st place of Matt Lundy Racing going into the 2 day event. We captured a third place finish on Friday followed by a 5th place finish on Saturday leaving the Shelton Team 11 points short of a championship and 2nd place overall for the season. "Friday night competition set us up well for Saturday and I had high expectations finishing out the season. I got out front early and felt good, unfortunately I got in on the cusion a little hard and biked the car pretty good nearly flipping and never made the ground back."
Special Thanks to all of our sponsors and supporters this year. Prescott Auto Body, Eco 3 Oil Change, RSS Race Cars, Brinkleys Automotive, Wild Bills Machine, The Norbury Family, Tom Champlin, Trinidee Shelton and the whole Shelton Family. (Johnny and Trinidee Shelton Pictured Far Left) August marks the half way point for the Challenge Cup Sprint Car Series. With just 6 races to go and all of them double headers, the Shelton Motorsports team sits 2nd in point for the season, 5 points back from Matt Lundy who has captured a total of 3 1st place finishes in 6 races. The Prescott Auto Body, Eco 3 Oil sponsored, Shelton Motorsports #9 has been on top the podium in all but two races this season. May and June we found ourselves fighting fuel system problems as the weather got warmer in the Arizona Desert. With the help of Bugs Norbury on the Team this year we managed to find a fuel setup that worked during this hot summer time racing and climbed back to finish 3rd and 2nd in our last two events while capturing our first heat race win of the season. The competition seems to get tougher with each race as the Challeneg Cup Sprint Series is growing during its first full Season @CSP. As the Summer burns on and we approach the Fall, we aim to continue the consistancy and momentum while pushing hard to earn some first place finishes in the second half of the season.
2011 Race SeasonArizona Speedway 11/5/11 Wild West Open CompShelton Motorsports finished up the regular season with a ninth place finish at Arizona Speedway. Contact with the wall in the heat race started us 17th in the main event. Car counts were up to our suprise with the Oval Nationals taking place in California. More than 25 cars showed for the 360 open comp event pulling car and drivers from New Mexico and the Mid West as the 360 non wing teams ready themselves for the Western World Championships later this month. The likes of Stevie Sussex, Charles Davis Jr, Mike Martin and Nick Auito were present to participate in what is scheduled to be 3rd of the 4 Fall events at Arizonas new track. Johnny Shelton in the RSS Industries #9s would start 17th in the main with a solid run up to 6th place by mid race running the low line with the help of a couple cautions. Once clear of traffic Shelton moved to the high groove running the cushion and began making ground on Mike Martin and Mike Colegrove running 4th and 5th. With one lap to go after making up a full straight away, Colegrove and Martin touched wheels spinning Martin , gathering up Shelton in the process, leaving the team with a 9th place finish. This would mark the 2nd race for the Shelton Motorsports team running their new ASCS 360 Engine. As the 2012 season approaches the Shelton Motorsports team looks foward to participating in the Challenge Cup Spec Sprint Division as well as ASCS and Open Comp 360 division events as we continue our push to the top. Thanks again to all our sponsors and look for schedule updates for winter schedule events!
Victory!! October 28th-29th Hall of Fame Classic at Canyon SpeedwayThe Shelton Motorsports Teams has been working over time lately with five races in the last 4 weeks, the last of which included the Hall of Fame Classic at Canyon Speedway to finish the Challenge Cup division Season. The hard work has paid off as The #9s Team put in a best showing of the season. Saturdays 2nd place Heat race finish and 1st Place Main event Finish marked the end of a good season and a good transition into the Western World Championships later this month. The weekend began with a sizable heat race win on Friday followed by Johnny Leading 20+ laps of the Friday Main event only to spin out running second on a late race restart. After the race Johnny said, " I had a feeling we where the car to beat all weekend I just needed to believe it, Casey Shuman approached me early in the weekend helping our confidence and said "if these guys want to win they got to beat you this weekend." Practice was great running with the USAC 410's, I had that great Friday Heat race win and the car felt perfect. After giving up the lead late in the Friday Main I was extremely disappointed. Fortunately I have good people helping me and we came back out tonight and finished the weekend in winning fashion learning from Fridays mistake." Johnny Shelton in the #9s Wild Bill Powered RSS chassis led 45 out of 50 main event laps between the two nights and took a 1st and a 2nd in his heat races. Best showing this year!!! The month of October included Some tough racing with a DNF at Arizona Speedway weeks prior and DNQ for the ASCS Southwest Championships at Canyon Speedway. Stay tuned as the team prepares for the Western World Championships where we will be going against the toughest 360 Non wing sprint car teams around!!!

Started 21st as a result of voluntarily tagging the field and finished 17th after the right rear tire went flat approx 20 laps in to the 30 lap main event. Definately the fastest laps we have turned thus far and consistancy was our goal for the night. Super fast track this weekend at USA Raceway and the Shelton Motorsports Team got alot of great help from the the Swinehart and Hosford teams. Thanks again guys! As we transition into higher levels of competition the excitement just grows. Also, a particular thank you to RSS race cars for all the support this year, it has made a measurable difference.
August 6th 2011To the disappointment of Prescott Locals as well as many drivers and race fans it has been announced that Prescott Valley Raceway will be closed for racing until further notice. This comes as the Challenge Cup Sprint cars approach the halfway point of the season. As a result of consistant finishes and the help of RSS Race cars, Johnny Shelton stands third in overall points with 2nd place within reach. A formal decision has not been made as to how the point championship be handled as a result the track closure. The good news, Kevin Mongomery of Canyon Speedway has agreed to run the Challenge Cup class at the Aug 20th race at CSP. Special thanks to Tim Beal and Beals Auto Body on sponsorship for this $500 to win event. The schedule will be updated as we continue to work with promoters on filling the rest of our schedule.
July16th 2011 Article byGaye Allen ABC MotorsportsSteve Sussex Dominates the WWOC Sprint Cars at Arizona Speedway with a Clean Sweep!
With a 19 car field, the best yet at this new facility, many were curious as to how the night’s Beaver Stripes- RSS Industries-ABC Motorsports-Wild West Open Comp sprint car events would unfold. Well, without a doubt last Saturday’s competition took sprint car racing to a whole new level at ET Motopark’s Arizona Speedway. The grandstands were full, as the fans braved the hot Arizona weather to watch their favorite Sprint car heroes battle it out on the 3/8 mile dirt oval. With a Challenge Cup contingent of 6 teams, the Top Dog competition would prove to be an exciting factor to the nights racing action. RSS Chassis would dominate the evening taking five of the top ten finishing positions. Including the second and the fourth spot. The first heat would be bested by Shon Deskins who started on the front row outside of Jody Wirth. Second place would be Josh Pelkey. Nathan High would secure the third spot, followed by Brian Swinehart, Jody Wirth, and Kevin Wolfe. The second heat, Stevie Sussex started on the pole and not be challenged, followed by Nick Aiuto who came from the 5th spot to get by third place finisher, Ryan Linder. Behind him Tom Ogle, RJ Johnson, who suffered brake problems, and Terry Goodwin rounding out the finish. Third Heat action, Tim Beal would battle for the win, overcoming Michael Curtis, John Brinkley, and second place finisher, Matt Lundy. Third spot would go to Johnny Shelton, fourth Brinkley, Curtis, Lee, then Fritz Croy who started at the tail, and worked his way up to second only to hit a tire on the infield puting him upside down and out of the chase. The Main Event lineup put Nathan High on the pole, Nick Aiuto on the outside, Pelkey inside second row, then Tim Beal, Third row Sussex, outside of him Shon Deskins, followed by Lundy, Shelton, Tom Ogle, Linder, Curtis, Swinehart, Brinkley, RJ Johnson, Wirth, Wolfe, Goodwin, Lee, and Croy loaded his damaged car early and wouldn’t make the field. The feature got off to a rocky start. Just after the Green Flag dropped, Tim Beal, veteran driver from Prescott somehow ended up sideways on the back straight taking out several cars bringing out the red flag. Most were able to restart, except for Ryan Linder and Beal. After the restart, the Main would go from green to checker with a lot of action packed tight and fast competition. The Arizona heat took it’s toll on the track surface, as it started to take rubber on about the 10th lap. Sussex took to the bottom along with High and Pelkey. Sussex worked his way through the field strategically making all of the right moves to take the front spot away from High. The Challenge Cup Top Dog Award went to John Shelton in the 9s car finishing in the 8th spot. We were happy to see a big improvement in the dust issue this weekend. The track was under a lot of strain with the extra time and toll taken by the make up races and the 108 degree heat. All these factors played havoc on the delicate track surface, but it fared surprisingly well. The visibility remained good during the feature, and the dust was comparable or better than we have seen at other facilities under the same tough conditions. With three different winners topping the three races scheduled, Arizona Speedway has proven capable of putting on great sprint car shows. All three WWOC Events were considered a success by racers, fans, as well as the track’s promoters. We hope to see more sprint car races at Arizona Speedway in the near future. Jonah Trussel plans to continue to improve the facility as money and time permits, and we are confident that it will become another premier location to watch and participate in out favorite sport! Main event results…. 1) Steve Sussex, 2) Nathan High, 3) Shon Deskins, 4) Josh Pelkey, 5) Nick Aiuto, 6) RJ Johnson, 7) Brian Swinehart, 8) Johnny Shelton 9) Tom Ogle, 10) John Brinkley, 11) Kevin Wolfe, 12) Michael Curtis, 13)Tom Lee, 14) Matt Lundy, 15) Jody Wirth, 16) Terry Goodwin, 17) Tim Beal, 18) Ryan Linder, 19) Croy (DNS) May 7 2011Round 4 at PVR. Good night of racing as the Shelton Motorsports Team with the help of Sam and Steve with RSS Race cars and Bobby Marcum with Mountain Valley Performance captured a 2nd place heat finish and a 3rd place Main event finish. The Teams best run of the season yet, but not without incident . Early in the heatrace exiting turn 2, Johnny jumpped the left front of Cliff Lee narrowly excaping the back straight wall. The main event was fast with the corners getting dry and slick towards the end. With 5 laps to go and restarting in the back of the field do to a spin while running 2nd, Johnny in the 9s worked back up to 3rd to take his first Podium finish of the year. Special thanks to all those involved helping to make this happen. We are proud to welcome Buck and Michelle Claterbuck to the team and have benefited greatly from their efforts. 2 weeks back at PVR.
May 7 2011Round 2 at Prescott Valley Raceway. Car counts are still growing and the Challenge Cup Series is in full swing. A good pill draw had Johnny starting next to Swinehart on the front row of the heatrace. A second place heatrace finish earned the team a front row starting position for the Main. The track was fast all night and Shelton maintained 2nd place behind Art Mankel through mid race when he took the lead as the Mankel encountered lapped traffic. A mid race yellow closed up the pack. Unfortunately while under yellow Shelton was forced to exit the track due to a missing fuel cap. The team was not able to repair the problem prior to the race continuing. Thanks to all our support.
May 7 2011Shelton Motorsports had the pleasure of participating in the inaugural Sprint car Races at Arizona Speedway, ET Moto Park in apache Junction. What a great evening of racing. 14 Open Comp sprint car teams showed to try out the new 3/8 mile dirt track. The layout of the track is great and this should prove to be a destination of many races to come. Competing with the open comp sprint cars always proves to be a big step for the team as we are a bit under powered for the 360's but a great opportunity non the less. Starting pole in the 2nd heat Johnny Finished 4th out of 7 cars. The 25 lap main event had us starting 5th row inside with a track that held up suprisingly well considering the minimum amount of clay on this track. Finishing 10th place overall left us hoping for more, however the Shelton motorsports Team did recieve the Top Dog recognition for Challenge Cup Sprint car entry. Prescott Valley will be hosting Round 2 of our Challenge Cup series and we look foward to seeing all our friends and family this weekend. The RSS Chassis and Wild Bills Engine have been performing well for us and we feel good about our chances at a podium finish in the near future.
April 30 2011Last Saturday Prescott Valley Raceway played host for Round #1 of the Challenge Cup Sprint Car Series Division. With a field of 14 cars and 13 starting the main event, the evening proved to be a successful start of the 2011 season. Johnny started pole in the first heat as a result of a good pill draw. Leading the first couple laps was an exciting way to get started but soon was overtaken by Fritz Croy of Prescott Az. on the outside of turn 4 resulting in a second place heat race finish for the 9s Shelton Motorsports Team. Track conditions stayed fair all night with some deep ruts developing in turns 3 and 4 prior to the sprint car Main event. Starting 2nd row inside Johnny fell to 6th place off the start. Within laps Johnny worked his way back up to 3rd place just in time for a caution and restarted in 4th position behind Art Mankel. Mid span of the 20 lap race would be plagued with yellow flags resulting in Shelton restarting in the 4th position after passing Art Mankel a number of times. By late race Johnny worked his way past Art Mankel and Matt Lundy for third position with an opportunity to chase down Brian Swinehart and Chris Beal running out front. After a late race yellow which closed up the pack, Fritz Croy raced from the back of the field,( as a result of his early race spin out while in the lead), to pass Johnny and eventually Chris Beal. The Shelton Motorsports Team held on to a 4th place finish. Brian Swinehart would capture the Feature win.
March 26 2011With 2 practices under their belt in the new "RSS Race cars" chassis, Shelton Motorsports headed to Canyon Speedway to participate in race two of the season for the ASCS Canyon region Sprit car division in Peoria, Az. With the help of Sam and Steve of RSS race cars the 9s Shelton Motorsports "Challenge Cup" Sprint car performed well. Track preperation appeared much to be desired while hotlaps and heat race did little to give the team an idea if the setup was right. Starting at the back of the B-main and quickly grabing a fourth place transfer spot Johnny ran consistant laps with a 3rd place transfer out of the B-main. Late race confusion resulted in a number of cars exiting the track under Yellow prior to the checkered. Johnny comented that with all the confusion and his race radio not functioning, he allowed two cars to start in front of him that should have been positioned behind on the restart. " I think we had a good chance of getting a B-Main 1st place finish and kind of blew it, the two cars that restarted in front of me never challenged me prior to the yellow and had to be a good straight away behind me all race, I'll pay more attention next time for sure. " The 3rd place transfer would have Shelton starting 2nd to last row inside for the A-main.
With the track being a bit slick all night the feature was plagued with crashes and yellows that sent many cars to the pits early. Managing to avoid the tangles and running consistant laps resulted in a 13th place finish for the Shelton Motorsports Team. At the nights end Johnny stated " we showed up tonight with the goal of making our first ASCS Main Event and keeping the car in one piece. I am very happy with how the team did tonight and the fact that we get to load the car in one piece and managed a 13th place finish is a great bonus. With the Prescott Valley Challenge Cup Series just around the corner I feel we have done our best getting ready and working in some smart track time" Prescott Valley Raceway season opener is April 30th |
